This month’s featured grant recipient is Companion Animal Rescue & Medical Assistance Inc. (CARMA), a non-profit organization doing its utmost to alter the destiny of dogs and cats abandoned in New Mexico.

Just over a decade ago, many of the unwanted animals in the rural Albuquerque suburb of Village of Corrales faced almost certain euthanasia. Fortunately, this group of supremely dedicated volunteers came together in 1999, determined to make a big difference in the way abandoned animals are treated. Even though the U.S. has seen a dramatic reduction in the annual number of dogs and cats euthanized – rates are one-quarter to one-fifth of those in decades past – an estimated 2.7 million still fail to be adopted every year. Given that 25-40% of rescue dogs are purebred, the need for specific-breed advocacy is vital. Championing the merits of a particular breed not only helps the breed in question, it also boosts the perception of all breeds. Nearly 600 pets have died and more than 3,600 have been sickened in an outbreak of illnesses tied to contaminated jerky treats made in China, federal animal health officials said in an October 22nd statement. Small and medium-size rescues are the primary beneficiaries of the grants awarded by the Dr. Jane’s HealthyPetNet Foundation. However, in times of crisis, they also bestow emergency donations of food and financial support to casualties of disaster. Thus far, victims of hurricanes, tornados and fires have all received funding and/or food donations from our non-profit. We can now add flood victims to the list of recipients who’ve benefitted from the foundation’s generosity.

In this special video report, Dr. Sarah serves as our ‘boots on the watery ground’ in flood-ravaged Colorado. Our Staff Veterinarian reveals what our non-profit has done to help alleviate the suffering of pet parents who’ve lost their homes and most, if not all, of their possessions.

As you’ll see, whole neighborhoods have been submerged or wiped off the map by the deluge, putting countless companion animals at-risk. Even now, weeks after the initial torrential rains and widescale flooding, rescue crews continue to search for missing people, dogs and cats.

Fortunately, amidst the chaos of indiscriminate destruction, Colorado residents have also been inundated with kindness from all corners of the country. Life-saving and sustaining aid pours in, including that from the Dr. Jane’s HealthyPetNet Foundation.

Not content to sit on the sidelines, this month’s featured grant recipient addresses the sport’s collateral damage, working to heal the bodies and spirits broken by years of circling the track.

The Dr. Jane’s HealthyPetNet Foundation is gratified to bring you news of our latest grant, awarded to Richardson Rescue, a medium-sized group in York, SC. Richardson Rescue has been rescuing pets since 2003. The mission of this Carolina rescue is to provide shelter and care for both dogs and cats, and ultimately to place them in forever homes. In addition to these vital services, they also provide a low-cost spay-and-neuter program for local families subsisting on low incomes. An ardent advocate on behalf of animal rights, founder Janet Richardson views her work as falling under the umbrella of “preserving the sanctity of animal life”. As goals go, it’s our opinion that her rescue agency has become a great success! Unlike many of our grant recipients, Richardson Rescue owns and operates a physical facility. The rescue center has a capacity of 130 animals, with nearly 40 dog runs, a medical facility with 15 crates and an observation area with 12 crates. As the non-profit wing of Life’s Abundance, the Dr. Jane’s HealthyPetNet Foundation takes pride in the diligent and committed work of all of its grant recipients. Every month, we’re reminded that wherever caring people come together in the spirit of hope, and apply hard work, amazing things can be achieved.

This month, it gives us great pleasure to bring you the story of Spotted Dog Dalmatian Rescue, which represents the pure spirit of small rescue ventures. In operation since 2011, the founders of Spotted Dog embody the drive to make a positive difference in the world. The non-profit is comprised of a group of volunteers, all of whom are committed to the mission of saving and improving the lives of hearing-impaired Dalmatians. By educating people about the consequences of negative stereotypes regarding deaf Dals, they’re hopeful they can make significant inroads in the acceptance of all dogs with disabilities.

That deaf dogs are aggressive and untrainable is a myth perpetuated by some for many years. Even in their short time, Spotted Dog has already witnessed a change in thinking among some breeders. It would appear that few are immune to the heartwarming message that also serves as their credo: "Deaf dogs hear with their hearts, not their ears". More...

In addition to interviews with company principals, the crew spoke with customers about their experiences using our products and an expert in the pet-health industry provided his take on our extensive pet product line.

And now, the documentary is scheduled to air … this Friday! That’s right, on May 24th, Life’s Abundance will be featured on 'The Profiles Series' hosted by Larry King, an iconic and beloved talk show host. We could not be more thrilled that our company was chosen to appear in the upcoming episode of this show, and that someone of King’s caliber will be the one to introduce our products to a sizeable national audience. There’s no doubt that many of these viewers will be learning about Life’s Abundance for the first time.

If you’ve never seen this new show, it’s an educational TV series that shares information about the world, revealing significant issues impacting lives and how to best prepare for the future. Each 30-minute program features modern innovations and business-engineered solutions, and is dedicated to uncovering stories that showcase the 'best and brightest' in various industries. The theme of this half-hour episode is ‘Made in America’ and it will be broadcast on the Discovery Channel on May 24th at 7:00 a.m. EDT and PDT.

Our five-minute segment will specifically address how we achieve our level of product safety. Also discussed are the 2007 pet food recall and the current recall-culture, where we continue to hear about one tainted product announcement after another. This short documentary uncovers the steps we take to ensure consumer confidence, especially for pet parents seeking to provide the best for their companion animals.

What you may not know is that, on every application for funding, applicants must submit specific information … about their finances, daily operations, cleaning protocols, how they would respond to hypothetical situations, and more. One pertinent question posed is, ‘If your funding request is granted, what are your plans for the money?’ When it comes to saving the lives of animals subjected to homelessness, neglect and abuse, sometimes the most noble goals are also the most universal … the provision of nourishment, shelter and a healing touch.
